So
Many Stars marks a sparkling debut for Chicago
vocalist Ava Logan, who presents a delightful group of jazz standards, with an
outstanding group of musicians behind her. Produced
and arranged by Henry Johnson, the guitarist for Joe Williams for many years,
the mix provides a wonderful blend of Logan’s
vocals, with the accompaniment of Johnson on guitar, Larry Novak on piano, Larry
Gray on bass and Leon Joyce on drums.
With such an all-star lineup, it’s interesting to note that
Logan’s vocals are presented in a featured, but not a
predominant position. The music is subtle, but the message to the audience
remains effective. This is a group that is truly enjoying the performance, and
blending together to benefit the music and the arrangements.
Leading off with the Bloom/Mercer swinging standard, “Day
In, Day Out,” Logan and the group set the tone, as Novak’s piano moves swiftly
from accompaniment to swinging solo, as Joyce’s rock-solid time holds the
groove. Johnson is up next, with
his guitar leading the way in a mellow presentation of, “Too Close for Comfort.”
Novak’s piano solo is beautifully supported by the gentle touch of
bassist Gray and drummer Joyce. The duo is dynamic, as they exhibit skills which
have been even more finely honed during their current engagement with the Ramsey
Lewis Trio.
The title track, “So Many Stars,” offers a nice change of
tempo and feel, as the music is more relaxed, but Logan
quickly picks it up again with, “The Song Is You,” as Gray offers up a rhythmic
2 feel before leading into a mid-swing beat.
The album closes with a bluesy version of “At Last,” which
showcases Logan’s phrasing and tone.
She opens up into a higher register, and effortlessly remains clear and sweet.
Finally, the group’s rendition of, “I Love Being Here With You,” is suitably
convincing, and the listener is left with the impression that this ensemble
loves playing together
