We Are The Pipettes

“It Hurts To See You Dance So Well,” talks about lost love and seeing your former boyfriend with another girl. Musically this song starts off sounding a bit like another 1960’s song, “The Leader of the Pack,” with power pop vocals.

All that is missing from the song “A Winter’s Sky,” is the hamburger diner with the tabletop jukebox. The Pipettes bring lush harmonies to this beautiful song. This is your evening winding down, slow dance song.

Now that the group has you lulled into a very nostalgic state, they mix styles, blending a bit of punk with Gwenno's superb vocals on the solo lines which remind you of the Cranberries’ lead singer Dolores O’Riordan as the Pipettes sing “Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me.” The Pipettes are not to be misconstrued at this point in their careers with the best wooers and crooners the music industry has known. It was surprising to me however, when I went back and listened to the girl groups of the sixties, both on video and audio, to discover how much better the Pipettes sound compared to a lot of groups, whose performances and recordings have become embellished with time.

The honesty and emotionally captivating mood of “Because It’s Not Love (But It’s Still A Feeling)”, makes this the best song on the CD. It is a realistic tune and a breath of fresh air. The message is simple, girl goes to dance or club, is not looking for a boyfriend, but does want to feel attractive and catch the eye of the guy who makes their heart beat a little faster, their breath come a little more quickly, and with whom they can share a dance. The song is built upon a strong bass guitar foundation, and is carried by strong guitar grooves.

If you want to have a lot of fun with music, that runs you through falling in love, falling out of love, and trying to figure out love, this is the CD you need to grab. If you want to recapture the feeling and mood of the 1960’s, but do not want to hear the same old songs, then you are in for a treat when you start to spin We Are The Pipettes.
