Country Star Suzy Bogguss Swings Into Pop
Although country fans
have since the late 1980’s recognized that Suzy Bogguss is an incredibly
gifted singer and songwriter, it was with her last CD Swing in 2003,
that non country music fans first experienced Bogguss’ excellence as
a
vocalist. Although she set out to make a country swing album, Swing was
widely embraced, and critically acclaimed within the jazz community. With her
current CD Sweet Danger, the two-time recipient of a Country Music
Association award has stretched the boundaries again, and this time we can
anticipate that the pop music community will warmly embrace her music. Bogguss
can no longer be pigeonholed as a cowgirl with a guitar and a song, but she
has a right to expect that critics, and fans alike will simply refer to her as
one of today’s top vocalists.
Romance, Wedding Rings And Rodeos
When
you combine swaggering lyrics with great guitar licks, and a good dose of
southern charm, you know there is a good chance that you are going to catch
someone’s eye, or in this case their ear, and that is exactly what is
happening to Texas native Owen Temple, whose country tunes from his current CD
Two Thousand Miles have made a solid impression on the Texas radio
market. The album released in January of this year features Asleep At The
Wheel’s David Grissom on guitar, is produced by Lloyd Maines (Dixie
Chicks, Terry Allen), and country songstress Terri Hendrix contributed harmony
vocals on several of the tracks.
"Daddy's Got A Shotgun," But He's Not Chasing This Duo
There is a song on
country duo Jess and Noah Bellamy’s current CD Nowhere Revisited,
called “Drivin’ Nowhere,” and it would not be more inappropriately titled if
it were being used to describe the careers of one of country music’s hottest
new acts. The Bellamys (if that sounds familiar, they are the sons of David
Bellamy of the internationally acclaimed The Bellamy Brothers), have been
eating up the Texas music charts. The duo’s first two singles from Nowhere
Revisited charted in the top twenty.
These Country Stars Shine Bright
“This album is accessible to people. It is a blue-collar Christian album. It is not something where you have to be a highbrow (person),” says David Bellamy of The Bellamy Brothers’ new CD Jesus Is Coming.
The
duo, David and Howard, first splashed the charts in 1976 with the pop song,
“Let
Your Love Flow,” a tune that occupied the # 1 spot on charts in the
United States, Great Britain, Scandinavia and Germany. David then wrote
“Spiders And Snakes,” another mega hit, only this time recorded by Jim
Stafford.
The Bellamy Brothers sang their way to the top of the charts again in
1979, with another quirky song, “If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body.” Once
again, the Bellamy Brothers had a # 1 hit only this time on the American
country music charts. The song also garnered a Grammy Award for the brothers
in the Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group Single,
category.
